Il Grand Mangiare (di JM)

Buon Appetito

JM goes around the UK, France, and Italy to mangia mangia. Follow for tasty thoughts on paintings, sculptures, poetry, churches and all saucy things I find on the road! (and maybe some food). I'll also be providing updates on the Spring 2022 exhibition in London my friends and I are organising.

The Back Room

Spring 2022 Exhibition

Whilst travelling around Europe this summer, I will be buying paintings to send back to London for a commercial exhibition in March 2022. I will be looking to buy five or six old master oil paintings, likely from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, of subjects ranging from still life to landscapes, seascapes, and historical/allegorical themes - whatever I manage to find, really!

I will then combine these old master paintings with five or six contemporary pieces from my friends. These will be diverse in subject and medium, from watercolours and photography to digital media and textiles! I am working with some very talented artists, and I hope that with their contributions, I can curate a space where the old is in conversation with the new. The exhibition is an opportunity to vitalise old paintings and support my friends. I hope to create an environment where the viewer engages in a dynamic conversation with art across time, medium, and space.

The exhibition will be held from 22 March, 2022 - 30 March, 2022 at McMillan Fine Art, a commercial art gallery in South Kensington, London, where I spent five months working on my gap year. The owners have kindly let myself and Mary Holmes (my co-curator) use the back room for a week to hold the exhibition. I am very excited. Hopefully see you in March at the gallery!
